MPs adopted Draft Law #9208 on the Peculiarities of Using the St. Andrew's Church, which is a part of the National Sanctuary "Sophia of Kyiv" in the first and final readings by a total of 237 votes in favor.
Earlier today, the bill was included in agenda by 232 votes.
“Adoption of this law is a historical action”, Speaker of the Parliament Andriy Parubiy said. Parubiy pointed that the bill provides reestablishment of the Stavropegion of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Kyiv and creation of the new Stavropegion residence.
Stauropigia means independence from local diocesan authorities and that a church is governed exclusively by the Synod (Council of a church).
“St. Andrew's Church will remain in the ownership of the state. This initiative was supported by all hierarchies of all churches” – stressed Parubiy.
